Although women have made great strides in equal treatment and better opportunities since the 1970s, the sad reality is that the U.S. government has still not passed an Equal Rights Amendment. Statistics still demonstrate that women typically earn only 75 cents to the dollar that men earn, which represents only a few cents increase in 4 decades of political action. Until Congress can recognize women as equals, they should not have to register for a military draft.
Women have made great strides in being accepted as equals in the military over the last twenty years, most notably finding positions on naval vessels at sea. While there are still a few bastions they have yet to penetrate, female contributions to the armed services are irreplaceable and integral to our operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since it is obvious that women can serve just as well as men, it is reverse discrimination for males to be compelled to register for potential draft, when women are not. Equal rights mean equal responsibilities.
The military is a traditionally male institution in which violence is promoted. Men do not want women in the military because they fear they would try to prevent violence to the women rather than do their job. Therefore, women should not be required to sign up for the draft.
