The Afghan government refused requests by the United States to hand over the people that planned the attack. They claimed it would be a violation of their tradition of hospitality. The United States was justified to invade Afghanistan to get at the people that were responsible for the attack on the United States and their citizens.
The government thought that Afghanistan was where the people that hatched the 9/11 plans were, and that there were more plans in the works. I recently watched a show on this, and we fell right into the overall plan of the Muslims, by attacking the country. But, it needed to be done.
Following the attacks on September 11, 2001, the United States had full justification to invade Afghanistan, as it was clear the attacks had been perpetrated by Al Qaeda, which was based in Afghanistan, with tacit approval of its government, the Taliban. In order to punish the perpetrators, and prevent future attacks, the United States had to take action.
Just like with the invasion of Iraq, invading Afghanistan is over the top. If the United States has cause to hunt down a terrorist or foreign leader, then we should just take them out, not cost thousands or tens of thousands of civilian lives to be lost and destroy a country in the process. Just look at Libya today. The cost of war or invasion is too high. We should just assassinate Qaddafi.
