Stems cells should be used, plain and simple. A human zygote is not a person, and it devalues actual born people by saying that it is. Stem cells have the potential to change the field of medicine. We could grow organs needed for an organ transplant, or even replace lost limbs, down the road. Stems cells could improve the lives of millions of Americans. They can help the disabled improve their health and let them get jobs. It can cure diseases that would kill a beloved family member.
I am 100% against abortion, but really? As long as they are there use them. And if abortion was illegal, you need to remember all the clinics that implant fetuses into women (can't think of the name of the procedure), but for every successful transplant, there are TONS of stem cells that never get used.
As human beings, when looking towards the future for all kinds of potential advances in fields, such as biology and medicine, we need to have a full understanding of exactly what stem cells are capable of. We will never get that knowledge if we do not run a very wide range of tests and research experiments, in order to catalog the data needed. A working understanding of that field could greatly expand the treatment options for billions of people for generations to come.
There are various ways to obtain stem cells, and some are not so controversial. We should continue using and experimenting with stem cells, because they allow us to go into a world that we have not quite encountered, and it could hold a lot of potential for all sorts of breakthroughs for us.
I think that stem cells taken from cord blood that the parents opted not to bank for themselves but donate should be fine to use. That way the baby is not hurt in the process and someone else may be able to benefit from his/her birth.
