  • Armando Gallaraga is an example of why baseball needs instant replay.

A perfect game is an extraordinary accomplishment that few pitchers ever reach. Two years ago, Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Gallaraga did it in an incredible performance, but there was one problem. The umpire, Jim Joyce, made an incorrect call on the last play of the game, ruining his perfect game. If the Major League Baseball allowed the use of instant replay, Armando Gallaraga would receive the honor he deserves.

  • The use of instant replay should be increased, because it allows everyone to see what happened in a larger scale, and also in slower motion.

The use of instant replay should be increased, because it allows everyone to see what happened in a larger scale, and also in slower motion. This allows everyone to see why a referee made a certain call on a play. It adds to the enjoyment of the game, by being able to see the great moments replayed for everyone to see.

  • Instant replay should be used more, and incorrect calls should be changed, based on those instant replays.

Other sports, like football, use instant replay all the time, and calls get changed because of it. Major League Baseball should use instant replay much more, especially on the really close calls. I think, if instant replay were used in those instances, incorrect calls should be changed. I'm not saying that the home plate ump should have his ball/strike calls changed, but definitely safe/out calls, if they are obviously wrong, should be changed. It can really change the tide of a game, and change the fate of a team during playoffs.

  • There are too many blown calls for Major League Baseball to not institute instant replay in more cases.

There was the unfortunate case of the Tigers pitcher who lost out on his perfect game because of a bad umpire call. If it was allowed right then and there, the replay would have shown the truth. But like in the NFL, it needs to come at a cost, where a team may have only so many per game, or have to pay a penalty for the play to be reviewed.

  • Yes, instant replay should be increased to ensure the umpires are making the right calls

Instant replay should be used more often, as long as they come up with some type of system that does not slow down the progress of the game. It could be used more to make sure balls landed in the field of play on hits down the line, or for close plays at home plate. They need to look at the way the NFL works its instant replay, and attempt to mimic that.

Yes they should because there are a lot of plays that should be called safe but the umpires called it out. It would help because they could get the right calls and people wouldn't get as angry like coaches and fans.

  • Yes, Major League baseball should use more instant replay because the technology is available and it would decrease human error in calls.

Yes, Major League Baseball should use more instant replay because the technology is available and it would eliminate human error in regards to missed calls by the umpires, especially since it costs some teams games and it ruined a perfect game pitched by a Tiger pitcher this year.

  • Yes, it was a travesty that the Detroit Tigers pitcher lost his perfect game due to a missed call.

Instant replay would not be appropriate for everything in baseball; it still has a place in the game. Without a doubt, balls and strike should stay a human called item. But for certain plays the impact of a bad call are just too large as evidenced by the Detroit Lions game. It is not impossible that a similarly bad call could cost someone a World Series and that is unacceptable.

  • I favor instant replay in major league baseball. There is no room for error at the highest level of competition. Why not get the call right?

Armando Galarraga should of had a perfect game, but the umpire took it away from him. There is no reason a call should be missed; they should always be reviewed. The game should not be decided by an umpire. It just doesn't make sense why we can't take the time to get it right. A picture tells everything.

  • Yes, Major League Baseball instant replay usage be increased to give the audience the opportunity to follow the game closer.

Major League Baseball still does not have instant replay beyond boundary calls on home runs. There have been too any mistakes made in the past due to wrong call. Using instant instant reply would make it more fair

  • I agree instant replay should be used more to make the game fairer and more accurate.

The recent loss of a no-hitter game over a bad call is a black mark on the game.

  • Yes. I think they should use it more, take advantage of the ability to do that.

I think they should take advantage of the ability to review the close calls just like they do with NFL games. Baseball games are much slower paced, so it wouldn't be a huge interruption to the game if they took another look at questionable calls. Seeing things from different angles will allow the refs to come to a much more conclusive decision.

  • The use of instant replay in Major League Baseball should not be increased, because it would eliminate the human factor from the game.

The use of instant replay in Major League Baseball should not be increased, because it would eliminate the human factor from the game. It is up to the umpires to determine whether a ball is fair or foul, or whether a player is safe or out. The controversy created when a call is disputed creates interest in the game and gets fans of both teams talking. Stopping games to use instant replay has other detrimental effects. The length of an average game would increase. The momentum a team is building could be disrupted. The pitchers would have to throw more to keep their arms loose during the added breaks. While I believe that instant replay could affect the outcome of a few games per season, there is not enough justification to increase its use. It is more important to keep the spirit of the game alive through traditional decision making.

  • The game is slow enough; adding more replays would slow it further.

If every play turned into instant replay, baseball games would take the better part of a day to finish. Another aspect is that it would lesson the truly spectacular plays' appeal if every play was considered for instant replay. Great plays like home runs should be the only instant replay seen. I think actually they should lessen instant replay to keep the announcer from analyzing one play to death.

  • No, from an umpiring standpoint definitely not.

I have been an umpire for competitive baseball for about 6 years now and it would only further the aggression towards the umpires. It would slow down the mlb game even more than it already is.

  • errors are and always have been apart of baseball

fans care a hell of a lot more then the errors that are made then the players do and isn't it the players that matter?

  • MLB should not use instant replay because it would only lengthen an already lengthy game.

Many people that I've talked to say that a reason that they don't like baseball is how long it takes. If we were to add instant reply into the picture, it wouldn't fix anything. Although it would make things more accurate, there would still be no way to fix every single little error. Humans are fallible and we just have to deal with it. Instant reply would bore us by turning a 3-hour game into a 4 or 5 hour game. Less people would also enjoy watching games at stadiums and therefore just lazily watch from the couch. This hurts stadium business and puts the whole economy out of whack.

  • It should not, as it will add more time a game already fraught with inefficiencies.

Expanding replay, aside from extending games, will also pose a new series of problems. Not only would an umpire need to decide if a play was legal, they would also need to make critical assumptions if the blown play was to have continued. For example: if a catch was over-ruled with a runner in 2nd base, would the umpire award the batter first base and leave the runner on second? Or would the umpire assume the runner would have scored? Too much control is left up to the officials, which is bad for any sport.
