Teachers are constantly telling their students to put away cell phones. As long as students carry cell phones they will be sending text messages to each other, disrupting not only the student sending or receiving the message, but all the students around that person who hear the tone or vibrations.
The argument for having cell phones available seems to center around parents contacting their children in case of an emergency. That can be done through the school. With the prevalence of text messaging and the distraction ring tones can cause in an educational setting, there is no justifiable reason I can see to allow them in a classroom.
Since cell phones have become such a distraction in educational institutions, I do believe they should be banned, as they already are in many government buildings. In case of emergencies, students can always be contacted via the school's phone system, so there is no reason for cell phones to be present in a classroom.
I do not necessarily think they should be banned but the use of them during classroom activities should be banned. They are a major disruption in the classroom and some people use them as a way to cheat during testing. I also feel that the ringers should be turned off during classroom activities and the phones should only be used for emergency situations. We did not have cell phones when I went to school and there was no problem, so I do not think there would be a problem if they were not in a classroom setting today.
