  • The pressure is off in single-sex schools.

    The teachers are more effective as the students will pay more attention as the pressure is off of them to try and impress the other sex. That way they will be themselves and apply themselves more to learning. It also allows the teachers to be able to teach more and not have to deal with so much drama.

  • I do think that teachers in a boys or girls-only school are probably more efficient, because they can focus on the unique styles that work best for the way that boys or girls specifically learn.

    Because studies have shown that boys and girls, in general, learn better with different techniques, I do think that teachers at a boys or girls-only school are probably more efficient, because they can focus specifically on using the techniques that work best for the gender they are teaching.

  • Lack of diversity increases efficiency.

    The fewer different variables that teachers need to deal with, the more efficient they will be. Teachers may have to approach things differently, or deal with extra problems, if they are in a mixed school. If they only have boys, or only have girls, then they can approach things specifically for that group. They will also not have to deal with issues that may arise from mixing boys and girls. These factors would make the teachers more efficient in the use of their energy and time.

    When a classroom of students is all comprised of a single sex, then it should be much easier for teachers to psychologically connect with their students and present the syllabus material in ways that engage the students and gets their interest. Girls and boys have different ways of hearing and seeing things, and if the teaching can be catered to their viewpoints, they can learn better.

  • Some people have an easier time dealing with one particular gender so I can see how this would be true.

    Many people in the world have an easier time interacting with one of the two sexes. There are not many people that have the same results dealing with both sexes. If a teacher had a preference for interacting with males then I could see them putting more time and effort into teaching them them then they would with females.

    Boys and girls learn in different ways, and are more drawn to different subject matter than the other. If teachers are able to direct kids to areas that interest them more, they tend to learn better and be more interested in their work. I do know of a couple of classes in our school district that are boy or girl only, and they are seeing good results and higher test scores, especially from the boys. That is not to say that all schools should be all boy or girl. But maybe this should be an option for parents, especially if they have kids who are struggling in a regular environment.

    In same-sex schools, there is no mixing of genders. The problems with boys and girls fighting each other because of their respective sexes is eliminated with this type of educational configuration. With less distraction, there is more time for better instruction, which should result in better academic results for the students involved.

    When separating boys and girls into their own schools, it has the effect of lessening the tension stemming from competition for romance. Young men would not be competing with each other for the affections of females. Conversely, girls would not be getting jealous or feeling depressed if they were rejected by male suitors; both sexes are free of these distractions and can concentrate more on studies.

    When you're just dealing with one gender of students you don't have to take both genders into accountability. There are also a lot less distractions from the opposite sex. I think this can make teaching a lot more efficient for teachers. They have less to deal with so they're able to give their all.

    Many of the classroom distractions begin when boys affect certain behaviors to impress girls. And even more interruptions are caused by girls trying to get the boys to notice them, and with girls interacting with other little girls centered on a boy!

  • Yes, the distraction of having kids of the opposite sex inhibits learning.

    Having opposite sexes in classrooms inhibits learning. Many studies have shown that kids do better when the classroom is one gender only. The kids are not distracted by the opposite sex and can pay attention better. In addition, girls especially have been shown to hold back participation in class when their are boys present, likely due to being "intimidated" by their presence.

    As a student of a single sex school, I think that learning was greatly enhanced and teachers had better opportunities to teach and get their information received in a better way. Teachers are more efficient in these environments for two main reasons. First, there are less in class distractions for students, they are not as focused on appearances or on embarrassing themselves in front of the opposite sex. Not to say that their are no distractions, but some are lessened due to gender. Secondly, teachers are afforded the opportunity to teach students in a way that resonates with them. There have been many studies in which it has been proved that males and females learn in different ways. Teachers could adapt their methods to better fit the gender they were teaching.

  • Yes, it's possible that teachers will work better in single sex schools.

    It is possible, but I do not believe it is probable. For instance, if it is an All girls school, you may have less fights to break up, less aggression to supervise. You may not have to worry about girls getting distracted by guys they like talking to or engaging with. But all of these things introduce a whole new set of problems. Simply eliminating these things due to sex does not mean it will be an easier environment. Human beings are to complex to measure. It is possible things might work out better for teachers, but I see no definitive evidence for it.

  • I agree teachers can make use of strategies in an all-girls classroom, and in an all-boys classroom, which don't work as well (or don't work at all) in the coed classroom.

    Girls in single-sex classes: 75% scored proficient, boys in single-sex classes: 86% scored proficient.

  • Some teachers are more comfortable teaching a certain sex of child.

    Most women teachers probably relate better to girl children than they do to boy children and the same probably goes for men teachers and relating better to boy children. If a teacher relates well to a child they are more likely to feel comfortable around them and to be able to teach them in a more productive way.

  • No, the teachers are not more efficient in schools that are boys or girls only, because it is the parents that really make a difference in these schools.

    Schools that are only boys or girls schools tend to be private schools that are being paid for by the parents. Because of this, the parents have a more intense interest in their child's education and, therefore, pay more attention to the child's needs and make sure they are studying properly. The teachers help, but they do not have as much of an impact as the actual parent making more of an effort.

    There is no evidence that teachers are more efficient in single-sex schools. The idea that the presence of the opposite sex makes it harder for kids to learn is insulting, as it implies that kids are so dumb, as to not be able to function in the presence of the opposite sex. Kids need to learn to socialize with members of the opposite sex early, and keeping them isolated from the opposite sex will only hurt them later.

  • I do not feel that teachers are more efficient in schools that are boys or girls only

    I have gone to a public school where there was a mix of boys and girls in every class of every year I attended school. I have done very well for myself and went onto college and attained a very good job and can retire next year at 45 years old. It all depends upon the teacher and how much control they have with the children. They must state their position the very first day of school and they can be just as efficient with a mix of children than one of just boys or just girls.

  • A teacher needs to be able to assist both sexes in educational learning for me to consider them efficient.

    The whole objective behind education in schools is for the student to learn about current events, current research, current findings, etc, and be able to apply them to their everyday lives. Students need to be prepared for their futures, and it is during this time of education where they find what exactly there interests are, and how they can best define the person they will grow up to be. Teachers should be more efficient in co-ed schools, because they need to provide the students with outlets of resources and information to help them decide their futures. I think it is a disrespect to their jobs for them to only be single-sex oriented.
