  • Education, particularly college, does not care about long-term success nowadays, because it's all about the money to them.

Higher education is expensive. Though they may have gone to a prestigious school and graduated at the top of their class, many people in the present end up in debt that they can not repay. More and more grown children are finishing up college and moving back in with mom and dad.

  • Yes! Education has become all about what looks good for the school and not about actually educating kids!

Everything about schools and education has just become ridiculous! There's no money, so teachers are getting laid off and things are just horrible now, compared to 20 years ago. The education board has created so many requirements to graduate high school, that teachers are left with no option but to rush through the stuff, even if that means kids don't fully understand the topic. Teachers are getting screw left and right... especially about this topic. It's not the teachers fault if the students can't remember certain things and then parents and society looks down upon the teacher, like they should learn to teach better. And added the fact no student comes to class everyday ready to learn. Students have there off days or they simply don't care about a lot of the topics being discussed (which isn't their problem or the teachers problem)... meaning if they dislike the subject students are going to remember just enough to pass the test and then instantly forget it. It's as if the student mind is like an etch o sketch... retain the info for the test and the next day its something completely new!

  • The education system has evolved into strictly teaching to pass the assessment test.

The days of teachers teaching out of textbooks is gone. They now teach the children strictly what is on the Leap test so that they will pass. If the children don't pass the test they can not pass to the next level and the teachers are held responsible. As a result they lose funding. This is a disgrace to the education system. The children literally can not learn the basics or even reasoning skills.

  • Education is much more about getting temporary results instead of long term learning because there are no future exams.

Education has become simply a place to get a good grade without actually learning material. Often times this takes the form of having teachers cram their students for standardized testing, producing a student who studies for the test and then forgets it all. If schools were to focus on long-term learning, they would have tests at every grade of the material you need to have learned.

  • Education has become more about temporary results and grades, because everyone just looks at what the student is getting now.

Our education system needs a big overhaul, as to its approach. The current approach is just a big band-aid to stop the bleeding, and is more a fix for temporary results. In order to fix the problem, you will need to concentrate on the core of the problem, and this stems more from home and involving the parents to encourage and motivate the students, alongside the teachers.

  • Obvious to anyone with a brain.

I’m not going to say much here. I just have a simple question. Who taught the US founding fathers? Who taught Benjamin Franklin? I’ve gone through the 12 years of public education (5 years private). Within the last year I’ve learned more over the internet then that wasteful part of growing up within the sheeple mill. There was zero preparation for real life while there.

  • Education is more about numbers than education.

Education today is all about numbers and not what you are learning. If the numbers are not there they say the system is failing. More kids than ever are going to college and doing well. We are constantly raising the bar to make things more difficult. Children are all required to do more now to raise the numbers and make schools look good.

  • I agree that education in most places is more focused on passing the standardize testing than long term results.

With all the worry school systems now have over the standardize testing, long term learning is taking a crucial hit. This added pressure takes away from the teachers style and fun things they'd rather do to help certain things stick.

  • Yes. The educational system is in need of a total revamp and overhaul.

The current education system is in need of a total revamp and major overhaul, in addition to adding courses geared towards "real-life" skills. Based on the current economy and beyond, today's student needs to be educated and trained in diverse areas such as entrepreneurship, and global business development, as well as, being knowledgeable in at least two languages.

  • Education has become much more like a business, so it absolutely is focused on short term goals, not long term success.

Education, be it primary or at the college level, is basically a business at this point. If students don't succeed in the short term, on standardized tests and graduation rates, then schools lose funding, lose donations, and lose their teachers. Unfortunately, all this succeeds in doing is preparing students to get through school successfully, not to get through life successfully. Obviously, there are exceptions, but the truth is that most schools are factories spitting out students as fast as possible.

  • When I was in college all of my pre-reqs had nothing to do with my major courses, so no, it's not all about long term success.

Education is all about profits, just like any other industry. The longer they keep students paying for tuition, the more profit they make. The first 2 years of college are all about pre-reqs and mandatory classes, which usually have nothing to do with your major. This means you're paying tuition to learn about stuff that you'll likely forget about after the semester is over. That's all part of their plan -- to keep you in for a few extra semesters so you pay more.

  • The education system gives more importance to results than long term development of an individual.

The parents have become more competitive than the kids. The students are under a lot of stress to get good grades. This can crush their personality and retard their development. They are in a mad race for grades where knowledge for long term is left behind. The inquest for learning something new and to invent something better is lost. Temporary results sabotage long-term success and knowledge.

  • I think it's more about the short term goal and getting more money rather than the long term success of the students.

Unfortunately, it seems like school systems are counting more on students getting good grades to assure more funding, by touting their 'excellence' rating, which will make people more likely to vote for levys, etc. as opposed to really caring that the students are learning things that will stay with them after they leave school. It hurts me to say it, but with schools, it always seems to come down to money.

  • Education has become more about results as far as passing kids through meeting a certain amount of graduates etc. but the education of the children and suffered.

I believe our education system has lowered its standards to pass more kids along rather than allowing kids to up the level and meet the requirements. Thus, more kids get through the system, but they do not know as much. This is evident in post-testing after graduation etc. where kids cannot find the U.S. on a map and do not meet basic grade level proficiencies that use to be in place in our grandparents' generations.

  • No, I do not agree that education is more about temporary results than long term success as you get out of it what you put in.

Regardless of what trends there are in education these days the ultimate reward belongs to the user. Most people are conscious of the benefits of a quality education, especially if they have to pay for it. Therefore they will maximize it to the fullest and squeeze as much as they can out of it. Trends are just that, trends. Eventually another one will come along and some people will foolishly follow but the true student will go for the long term value rather than temporary results.

  • No, education is much more than just temporary results and grades as what we learn in school will be useful to us all our lives.

Although education is about grades and results, it has very much useful in real life. Subjects like Maths and Social sciences will be useful to us in all walks of life, we cannot do without them. It is unfair to say that education is merely about temporary results as the impact of education whatever it maybe, lasts a whole lifetime
