  • Children should not have to face the social pressure of comparing themselves to others, based on what they can afford to buy.

My daughter attended an urban elementary school where everyone wore the same clothes (khakis and a white shirt), and everyone got a free lunch. Students were able to focus on their studies, and the school was ranked "exemplary" among state standards.

  • School uniforms are the most effective way to eliminate social and economic differences between students, because it puts all students on a level playing field, appearance-wise.

School uniforms are the most effective way to eliminate social and economic differences between students. First off, it reduces bullying, which is a big barrier when it comes to learning. In this society, money is still a power issue. Children with less trendier clothes tend to get bullied by those who have families that can afford expensive things.

  • I've been in the classroom for 7 years now, and can tell you that the benefits of school uniforms outweigh any negatives.

I've been in the classroom for 7 years now, and can tell you that the benefits to school uniforms outweigh any negatives. I have heard arguments from parents about not wanting their child to lose their individuality. But, honestly, do you really think it is the clothes that make your child unique? School uniforms help limit the distractions of dress, and they curtail socioeconomic stigmas that take the focus off classroom learning. Many students have stated that they enjoy the uniforms, as it gives them a sense of school pride. Plus, they don't have to worry about what to wear or what other kids will think about their clothes. Most importantly, look at student achievement at schools that have adopted uniforms. You will see that, almost immediately, learning gains take place. Isn't that what we want?

  • School uniforms are the best way to end the economic pressures in the school systems, because clothes are such a part of everyday life.

If the public school systems would change the dress code to uniforms only, then the kids would not have to be judged so much in school. There will never be a perfect system of equality, but a uniform can sure help out the poorer kids who can't afford all the expensive clothes.

  • Yes, because it prevents students from being judged based on their clothes or financial standing.

School uniforms help accomplish their namesake: uniform. Students can no longer be judged by their clothes, or on their parents' status. It also prevents theft and bullying. Moreover, it could help prevent gangs. School uniforms are usually cheaper than any other item of "fashionable" clothing that a child might want, and that pressure would ease off their parents as well.

  • In most cases yes it is because when a school implements uniforms everyone will be equal since no student wears clothes better than any other student.

I am from a different country and in my country students in public schools and private schools follow a policy that all students must wear a uniform. This is put in effect to avoid any discrimination in terms of social and economic differences between students. School is a learning institution and not a fashion institution.

  • I think it'd the best way to eliminate differences between students.

If everyone wears a uniform at school, there would be substantially less bullying. Kids with trendier clothes couldn't make fun of kids who are less fortunate and can't afford trendy clothes. I also think it would take the anxiety out of the children who would be self conscious the majority of the school year because they don't look like everybody else. Uniforms would be an excellent idea and would benefit everyone.

  • Absolutely, as the father of two boys who attend a school district that requires uniforms, I firmly agree that this is an effective way to eliminate a number of distractions and stay focused on learning.

For approximately 13 years, I've worked for a software company that provides solutions exclusively to public school districts and private schools throughout the United States. There's very few things that school administrators agree on collectively, but the overwhelming majority are strong supporters of uniforms. It eliminates so many distractions and helps keep the focus on learning.

  • Yes, I agree that uniforms are effective in eliminating social and economic differences because some students can not afford to buy what is "cool".

By having children where a specified uniform it helps in eliminating judgment of a child by the clothing they wear, as well as creates an equality among the children. Other children will not be able to discriminate against a child if he is of lower economic means based solely on the clothes he/she wears. Children will be teased far less if the cannot afford to buy what is "in".

  • I believe that school uniforms level the playing field because when students are dressed alike, reduces the pressure to wear the latest fashion which some families cannot afford.

I feel that school uniforms are a great idea. Not only do the students look better, it would eliminate some of the outrageous clothing that is being worn to school today. It would take pressure off parents who have difficulty providing the latest fashion of the moment for their children. Uniforms would also help school administrators in that they would be free of policing what students are wearing to school.

  • School uniforms help reduce the noticeable effects of socioeconomic differences between classmates.

School uniforms help create a more helpful and less divisive learning environment. By having one set uniform and set of clothes for all attendees, the schools remove a huge amount of stress for young people as they don't have to worry about showing off or how their clothes will reflect their families. With this reduced, the students can focus more on learning and building social connections based on interests and beliefs and not social or economic status.

  • Matching school wear by way of uniforms is a proven method to level the playing field.

Whether you're black or white, big or small, rich or poor, wearing the same exact thing as everyone else in your school most certainly levels things out. People will always be individuals and their individuality will always come through. It will always be filter through the outerwear of homogeneity. This takes away all outside forms of criticism and modes of attack. It really makes people concentrate on what is truly different, but it is not the ones in the uniforms.

  • School uniforms do eliminate social and economic differences between students, everyone wears the same thing, there is no competition over who has the better outfits.

School uniforms eliminate the idea that a child can show up to school wearing the most famous and expensive brands versus something bought a flee market. If this is gotten rid of, the kid with the expensive clothing will not be given all the attention and put in the danger of becoming a target because of possible wealth. This can also be applied to the poor child who may not get the best of everything and yet avoid being made fun of or picked on. If everyone has the same uniform, they are forced to accept that at that moment, they are the same as everyone else.

  • I agree school uniforms help eliminate social and economic differences between students.

Students and their families that have financial difficulties at home often cannot afford high priced clothes and shoes just for the show. If uniforms are utilized, this eliminates lots of peer pressure, as all are dressed similar and differences may go unnoticed easier. This makes it more comfortable for those less fortunate and allows them to concentrate on studies, more so than what others are wearing or what others may be thinking because of what they might be wearing. This can give a student more self-confidence, therefore, allowing for better grades, hopefully!

Because of this reason: Bullies will be bullies and nerds will be nerds and so on. if you make uniforms a must at schools, then you will only make those "uncool" distinctions even more obvious!

  • School uniforms are not always effective in eliminating the difference, because students have many other ways of finding these differences.

Wearing a school uniform does not make you equal with everyone else. It simply makes other distinctions more obvious. Rather than look simply at what you wear, students look at how you wear it. They look at what kinds of things you own. They look at your hair accessories or your shoes. There is always something people find to notice that is different. Not having a uniform can actually be helping students to appreciate differences. Our goal should never be to eliminate differences, but to teach students that differences are good. We need to teach students to treat each other with respect, regardless of social and/or economic differences.

  • School uniforms are not effective and it affeccts social differences

First of all, dress code should be an expression of who we are not what we are. Second it affect the social differences which is saying that rich kids are better than poor and also bridging gaps between social and economic groups.

  • School uniforms are not the most effective way to eliminate social and economic differences because this should be done through education.

First of all, I do not understand the need to eliminate social and economic differences. We are not a socialist country. Socialism was attempted in the communist countries and it failed miserably. Education is the proper means of bridging the gap between the two groups. Appreciation and understanding is what is key here. I was raised in a lower middle class neighborhood. I had teachers in high school who would take us on field trips to help lower class neighborhoods with various projects. Things like this would help more.

  • School uniforms do nothing but hinder students and help promote discrimintion.

I attend a public school with a uniform dress code for all students. Having to wear a uniform only shows more who his poor or rich. The unifroms come from many different compines and the highend colthing is worn by the rich kids and the poor kids have to wear genertic brands. the system of uniforms is ineffective and fueling hate.

  • School uniforms are not effective since they do not erase the obvious knowledge of whose parents are rich and whose parents are poor.

I believe school uniforms only hinder individuality and do nothing to eliminate social and economical differences. Students are fully aware of those who come from money and those whose parents work hard and struggle to pay bills. Uniforms only make it harder for students to feel like individuals, which is just as important to teenagers as the need to feel excepted. Many students only find other ways to rebel against feeling like sheep in a herd. Individualism is one the most important things to a teenager and it encourages creativity, and open-mindedness.
